Chapter Four

We should have seen it coming. We should have known that the Empire forces would not take much time before proceeding to replicate the Cloud.

“They’re all in incubators—hundreds of them, and I can’t tell which exact one is the real Genesis.”

“Well, if they’re still in incubators, that would mean that they have not been activated yet or the Empire forces haven’t figured out how to do so yet. We all know how arrogant and egoistic the Empire forces are. If they already have even half of that number of the Cloud clones, best believe the entire universe would be test experiments by now,” Dawn says.

I take a moment to appreciate the intelligence of the ladies in my crew before responding.

“Hmm, that’s a good point,” Trinidad comments just as I open my mouth to speak. I try not to dwell too much on the fact that Trinidad has just complimented Dawn, and I bring my focus back to the work at hand.

“Five minutes, Key,” Wawa announces.

Right.

“But how can we even be certain that Genesis is in there?” Gwen asks.

There’s only one way to find out.

“Genesis!” I bellow at the top of my voice as I run down the corridor.

As I approach the end of the corridor, I feel my hope begin to dissipate slowly.

“Genesis!”

“Key.” The familiar voice of Genesis inside my head stops me in my tracks. Never have I been so happy to have that entity disobey me. I almost feel tears well up in my eyes.

“Genesis?” I call again to be certain that my mind isn’t playing tricks on me.

“I’m right behind you.”

I turn around slowly, but I see nothing still until slowly Genesis's shapeless form is unveiled and floating right there before my eyes, blinking at me.

“Did you miss me?”

“How . . .?” I swallow my question as I remember the exosuit.

“Did you miss me?” it asks again.

“Yes,” I admit sincerely, to my own surprise. “What did those vile soldiers do to you?”

“They thought they succeeded in trapping me, and I played along while they tried to make copies from my nanomites configuration,” Genesis explains.

“And? Why did you just let them?”

“I had my plans before disbanding from you and your crew, remember? I cannot leave without completing that. The Telos touch has to be stopped no matter what.”

“And how is that going for you?” I ask, trying to keep taunt out of my voice.

“I’ve been making progress. More than half of the Empire soldiers here are subconsciously controlled by me, but they do not know that, of course. There’s still a long way to go, however, and I think my plan might be going too slow,” Genesis confesses.

I hadn’t expected such plain honesty so I am short of words for the next few seconds. But then again, it’s Genesis, and if anything, that entity is best at dishing out the truth whether or not you want to hear it.

“It’s a good thing I came to save you then. Let’s get out of here.”

I look down at the timer and I realize that we would never make it out without a confrontation.
